I noticed some people make their own closed communities to post/archive their fanfiction, and decided to try it out myself here: [community profile] ficsimmy

I am trying to backdate the fics to when I posted them, and it generally works, however, the home page still shows the posts in the order in which I posted them. E.g. the most recent post is dated November 12, then the next one November 13.

Is this intended behavior? If so, does anyone have a workaround for similar use-cases? 😟 I have some fanfiction from 2013 that I want to back up here, but I do not want it at the top of my page in fear of people thinking that's still representative of how I write today 😅

I did find this FAQ article related to backdating + the "don't show on reading pages" button which says "This option is not available for community accounts", but I thought this just referred to the hide from reading page button.

It's a bit weird that I can backdate it, but it will show up in the wrong order on the home page, and in tags. Checking from the archive looks fine, they're all in the correct date I set them as.

+ Two days into the new year, two episodes into season 1 of The X-Files. I know we all agree Gillian Anderson is hot stuff, but are we talking about it enough?? Also, I remember being very annoyed at Scully's reluctance to believe in the supernatural as the show went on, given how much she'd experienced by then, but WOW does she have the patience of a saint in the beginning. Mulder is lucky he's cute. Also also, they really did smoosh these two together like a pair of dolls they wanted to kiss right from the start. Shippers must have been eating the wallpaper by episode five.

Can't wait for less UFOs, more bizarre horror cases.

+ Went to the local mall with my mom today, and I am now the proud owner of a 50% off memory foam pillow. Fingers crossed I vibe with it.

+ While my mom was looking for things for her calendar, I happened to spy a shiny new hardback of Mona Awad's Bunny, with funky pink bunny endpapers and sprayed edges. And so, silly me, with the goal of reading my damn physical books, came home with yet another physical book. Le sigh. At least I'm 98% sure I will vibe with this book something fierce.

+ Just did the final tagging for the last check in post of [community profile] rec_cember. I'll be tallying the recs and fandoms covered tomorrow but spoiler: it's A LOT. If you're looking for something to read, I highly recommend having a look at the tag set. We got a really good variety.

+ Stranger Things has finally ended. I feel like they yanked Nancy out of the fic I recommend a couple of days ago and shoved her in there, and that was endlessly amusing. I just sat there squinting at it for a minute, going full headtilt. They very much indulged in a lengthy wrap-up that some will hate and others appreciate very much *cough* fandom *cough*. The final battle was extremely 80s. Also, what was the costuming department smoking? I am saving this quote for later. )

+ It's Snowflaking Time yay!

#1 The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

Just going to nab my sidebar intro real quick: Spoiler-adverse. Migratory fandom gopher. Vids occasionally, but never finishes. Also nursing a PhotoShop addiction. #1 fandom is awesome ladies.

Honestly just hope to see more people around ♥ (195 comments on the challenge post already, so that seems very likely lol) Not sure if the Create A Challenge Challenge is rolling around again, but if so, I am plotting.

Somehow I was under the impression that I didn't do much travelling in December. Making this video reminded me that I went to London twice as well as Harwell and then Norfolk for Christmas. I didn't fly, but I certainly spent a lot of time on trains and in the car.

The full year video reminded me that I flew to new places for conferences: Hamburg (Germany), Nicosia (Cyprus) and Larnaka (Cyprus). I visited my parents in the USA. I went to Paris (France), Darmstadt (Germany), and Frascati (Italy) for workshops. We travelled as family by train across Western Europe to go to a conference in Vienna (Austria). We holidayed in Wales and Norfolk. I went to Maui (USA) for a conference. It was an incredibly busy year.

On the Topic of Mary Sue

I started my internet day off with my hackles up apparently.

Reference material: Mary Sue at Fanlore & Mary Sue at Wikipedia.

Language evolves, meanings drift, and there will be variation, especially once you add in geo-location, age, gender, etc to the use of language.

I personally will never take well to seeing a writer use Mary Sue or its equivalent concepts to disparage their own writing. As I came to online fandom a bit late, the meaning for Mary Sue that I was quickly seeing was "this character is the main character and stands out but oh it is a girl and therefore is a Mary Sue".

Folks, have you read mythology from around the world? The main characters are nearly always bigger than life in some fashion. The best or worst at so many things, and they are MEANT to stand out and take your mind into imagination and wonder. All too often I see the accusation of Mary Sue used not at a badly written character but at one who is meant to be the push-pull point of the story! One who is crafted to be the Main Character.

And the biggest example I have of it is Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Specifically to that movie, Rey is set up to parallel Luke Skywalker pretty intensely. And she was HATED or mocked until people latched onto the concept of leashing her to the villain of the story. Rey was NOT poorly written. She is almost beat for beat Luke Skywalker from the very first movie in her journey. And in both cases, they ARE MEANT TO BE THE SPECIALIST LITTLE SNOWFLAKES because it is THEIR STORY.

Mary Sue and her cousins DO exist. A lot of people will start out experimenting with a self-insert crafted to fit the narrative they want to explore. They are great beginnings for many people.

BUT NOT EVERY OC IS A MARY SUE. Sometimes, they're just the center of the story that is being told.
